Graying Hair

Graying of hair (Canitis) is part of natural aging process. Hair turns gray due to reduction in melanin formation at hair roots as we age. When graying occurs at an early age, it is called as Premature graying of hair. Premature graying is steadily on a rise since past few years. Let’s delve into why this is happening and how can we treat it

Graying of hair occurs due to interplay of multiple factors

  • Genetic- early graying gene often runs in families and it is inherited
  • Micro Nutrient deficiencies like iron, Vit B5, Vit B12, Copper, Zinc, etc.
  • Hormonal imbalance like hypothyroidism
  • Hard water
  • Stress
  • Smoking

There is no scientific evidence of this till date. Graying of hair is progressive condition and when you are plucking a gray hair other hair in surrounding may already have started losing colour at its root level. However, repeated plucking of hair can result in damage to hair roots and so should be avoided.

No, it’s a myth. Colouring or dyeing existing gray hair does not trigger further graying.

At Eternis clinic, we consider patient’s lifestyle, dietary habits, medical history and if required advice necessary blood tests to rule out suspected underlying disorders.

Any causative factor is then treated accordingly.

Special nutrient supplements for gray hair are recommended. Starting treatment in its early stage can yield favorable results.

Even though early graying cannot be cured, however with improved lifestyle, good dietary habits, stress reduction & good nutritional support, its progression can be slowed down.
