Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin: What You Need to Know Before Booking

Laser hair removal works differently on darker skin tones. Here's what you need to know about safe, effective treatment for Indian skin — including which laser technology matters most.

Laser Hair Removal for Dark Skin: What You Need to Know Before Booking

Laser hair removal works by targeting the melanin in hair follicles with concentrated light energy. This is straightforward on fair skin with dark hair — high contrast, easy targeting. On darker Indian skin, the calculation is more complex: the laser must selectively heat follicle melanin without overheating melanin in the surrounding skin.

When this balance is wrong, the result can be burns or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). When it's right, laser hair removal is safe, effective, and produces permanent reduction on Indian skin. The difference lies almost entirely in technology and technique.

Why wavelength matters for Indian skin

Not all lasers are equally suitable for darker skin tones. The key variable is wavelength — measured in nanometres (nm). Shorter wavelengths are absorbed more aggressively by melanin and are therefore riskier on darker skin. Longer wavelengths penetrate deeper with less surface absorption, reducing the risk of skin injury.

  • Alexandrite (755nm): Excellent for fair to medium skin. Not recommended for Fitzpatrick IV–VI (most Indian skin).
  • Diode (800–810nm): Suitable for light to medium Indian skin tones with careful settings.
  • Nd:YAG (1064nm): The longest wavelength in clinical use. Safest for darker skin types — it passes through the epidermis with minimal absorption and targets the follicle directly. The standard of care for Fitzpatrick V–VI skin.

What is Primelase — and why does cooling matter?

At Eternis, we use the Primelase system for laser hair removal. Primelase combines a high-powered diode laser with Crystal-Freeze contact cooling — a sapphire tip that chills the skin surface to near 0°C during each pulse. This cooling protects the epidermis from thermal injury and allows higher energy to be delivered safely to the follicle.

For patients with darker skin, we adjust fluence settings and switch to Nd:YAG where appropriate — both available within the same system. This flexibility is what allows us to treat a range of Indian skin tones safely in a single device.

How many sessions do you need?

Hair grows in cycles, and laser only destroys follicles in the active growth phase (anagen). Since only a fraction of follicles are in anagen at any given time, multiple sessions are required to catch each follicle. Most patients need 6–8 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart for the body, and 4–6 sessions for the face.

After a complete course, the majority of hair is permanently reduced. Some fine regrowth may occur in hormonally sensitive areas (chin, jaw), which may benefit from an occasional maintenance session.

What to do before and after treatment

  • No waxing or threading in the 4 weeks before a session — the follicle must be intact for the laser to target it.
  • Shave the area 24 hours before your appointment.
  • Avoid sun exposure for 2 weeks before and after each session.
  • Use SPF 50 daily on treated areas throughout the course.
  • If you have a history of PIH, inform your doctor — a topical preparation protocol may be added before treatment begins.

Is it safe if I have a tan?

Active tanning raises the melanin level in the skin surface, narrowing the safety margin between skin and follicle. We advise postponing sessions if you have a fresh tan. If you're planning laser hair removal in Pune's summer months, early morning appointments and consistent sun avoidance between sessions are worth planning for.
